Domaine de la Coume du Roy is a 6th generation winery, consisting of 25 hectares, owned by modest Agnes and Jean-Francois Bachelet in the town of Maury. The winery is situated in French Catalonia, near the Spanish-Mediterranean coast. They are most well-known for their sweet wines, which they produce a Muscat de Rivesaltes and a Maury Doux. They also make a very traditional Cotes du Roussillon-Villages, which will soon be known as Maury Sec. Jean-Francois is a retired colonel in the French Commandos attached to the NATO Peace-Keeping forces.
In 1998 he and his wife took over the domaine from Agnes’s parents. JF learned how to make wine from his mother-in-law, who learned how to make wine from her father, etc. – a true unsung tradition of wine-making from generation to generation. As a result, they have a library of very old vintages of Maury, most from birth years of relatives, that were put aside for them at birth. The oldest vintage existing to this day in their cellar is 1880.
