Bodegas Iturria is a new winery in the Toro appellation within the region of Castilla y Leon, founded in 2009 by Xavier Iturria. Xavier studied Oenology and Viticulture at the University in Bordeaux. He had worked since 1999 at many important Spanish wineries in Ribera de Duero, Rioja, and Toro before starting out on his own. The varieties of vines planted are Tinta de Toro and Garnacha. The vines are 20-60 years old and are planted in a mix of clay, limestone, and sandy soil at an altitude of 700 meters.
All of the vines are planted from ungrafted rootstock (no Phylloxera). No Herbicides are used. Tinto Iturria is a blend of 90% Tinta de Toro and 10% Grenache. It firmly structured with fine tannins along with red fruit and spicy notes. Valdosan comes from the oldest vines, sees more time in oak. The wine is fruity with good integration of oak, It is very round and spicy. Elegant with a long finish. Production is very limited on these wines.
